Ronald Miller, CSP has an extensive environmental,
occupational health and safety management background and is an
accomplished trainer and presenter. After graduating from the
University of Maryland, College Park, with a Bachelor of Science
degree in industrial technology/education for industry, he began his
career with the engineering group of Aetna Casualty and Surety as a
Loss Control Engineer. In this position he assisted insured clients
with the implementation of effective safety programs. This period
also provided him with extensive knowledge of fire protection
systems and the newly begun Occupational Safety and Health
Administration.
He went on to work with Avon Products, New York, NY, a specialty
chemical manufacturer with world-wide operations, as a safety
engineer. During this time, he developed a Flammable and Combustible
Liquids Handling Procedure. This work included a major upgrade to
the handling of thousands of gallons of ethyl alcohol including fire
safety and detection systems world-wide which he project managed for
the US facilities. Due to his successful work with this and other
projects he was promoted to Corporate Manager, Environmental, Health
and Safety Compliance. A primary accomplishment was the reduction of
the company’s workers compensation costs by $4 million dollars over
four years. This was implemented through the development and
roll-out of a safety management system that included senior
management support and commitment, employee involvement and a new
safety metric methodology. These measurements included the
completion of hazard recognition activities by all employees. At
this time the EPA Superfund Law and associated hazardous waste
programs were active. Accordingly he was directly involved in the
negotiations of several PRP (Potential Responsible Party) Committee
deliberations. These activities reduced the PRP liabilities by
obtaining releases from the hazardous waste site actions and
delisting of a facility in Puerto Rico.
Mr. Miller later became the Director, Safety, Health and
Environmental Affairs with Scientific Atlanta, Atlanta, GA where he
managed the EH&S programs for this multi-state electronics and metal
fabrication firm. During this tenure, he expanded on his safety
management system to include Health Services, industrial hygiene and
environmental management. While at Scientific Atlanta, he was able
to develop and implement an ergonomics program that successfully
reduced the ergonomics losses and associated costs. Also developed
was an extensive hazardous waste management system to ensure
reduction of waste and compliance with EPA standards.
He was recruited to become the Director, Safety & Industrial Hygiene
for the $2.5 billion Consumer Products Business of James River
Paper, a pulp & paper manufacturer, converter and related products
company. While at James River he wrote the Division’s Safety Manual
including an extensive safety management approach with targets for
performance improvement and management accountability.
After relocating to the Chicago area, Mr. Miller became the
Director, Safety & Environmental Affairs for Release International
(later Rexam Release), a multi-million dollar multi-state silicone
release liner manufacturer. At this time, he implemented an
activity-based safety management system including, job safety
analyses, job behavior observations and safety metrics targeting
activity completion. This was an extension of the previous system
components implemented at earlier companies.
During the time Rexam Release was exiting the release liner
business, Mr. Miller joined the National Safety Council as Principal
Consultant providing on-site training & consulting. During this
period he worked with companies like Honda of America Manufacturing,
assisting them with the improvement of their safety management
systems. After two years he was promoted to Director, Training &
Consulting Services, during which he expanded the on staff
consultant number from three to six and increased the consulting and
training impact of the Occupational Safety and Health department.
After eight years, and an opportunity to relocate to the coast of
North Carolina closer to family, Mr. Miller established a safety
training and management business, Beacon Safety Consulting, LLC.
Through this firm he provides safety training and safety management
program assessments and audits. Beacon Safety Consulting, LLC is
located in Wilmington, NC.
Some of his clients include American Airlines; UPM Blandin Mill;
Kaiser Bellwood Extrusion; City of Wilmington, NC; and the National
Safety Council. He has also participated in webcasts and audio
